Professional drifting is considered to be a new sport, which was officially introduced to the US audience in 2003. Formula Drift, Inc. has formed Formula Drift Championship that gathered all the amateur and professional racers at one place. Besides the USA drifting has always been popular in Japan, as in the United States, long before a professional series was developed. Japan's drifting league is known as D1 Grand Prix which was one of the first professional drifting organizations in the entire world. However, the establishment of American drifting championship series has not only made the sport more popular, but more enjoyable as well.
If you have ever watch racing then you may have heard of drifting it is a sport that is becoming more and more famous every day. Drifting is driving a car that is out of control but being able to keep it under control and being able to know how to push the car to the limit but also know how to not push the car over that little line. It is scored by the performance of the driver. There are many drifting techniques and styles that are used to get your car into a sideways position. There are lots of other stuff related to drifting than meets the eye. When you manage to drift sideways, you are probably used to counter steering in order to straighten your car out and safe you billet grills from meeting the fence.
The first technique is based on getting you drifting by using the e-brake. Not as popular for the rear-wheel drive drifters, but a must for front-wheel drive cars. The feeling is a bit different than the RWD's and you slow down much quicker, but it's about the only way for a FWD drifter. You want to set yourself in a good position for the upcoming turn, once you start turning, you pull the e-brake up causing loss of traction on the rear wheels. It is very difficult to maintain a smooth drift especially when there are multiple turns one right after another.
The second technique is based on popping the clutch. The trick is to maintain your back wheels from gaining traction and at the same time staying in control by steering the front wheels and playing with the accelerator and clutch. Once you set your car into position with an on-coming turn, you want to disengage the clutch and down shift into 2nd gear. While this is happening, you want to peg your RPM's at about 3500 - 5500, and you want to start steering away from the turn. After that, simultaneously engage or pop your clutch and steer hard away from the turn. This should get your back wheels spinning pretty well. The trick is to maintain your back wheels from gaining traction and at the same time staying in control by steering the front wheels and playing with the accelerator and clutch. You might have to pop the clutch a couple times before the next turn.
When it comes to amateur drifting, you will find that you have a number of different options. An amateur is often a way to describe someone who participates in an activity at a recreational level, instead of doing so for income. But first you need to plan your budget as you will need to by not only a drifting car itself but also automotive accessories for it like body kit, special drifting wheels and much more. When you are looking for a drift car, you need a vehicle with the front to back weight ratio and rear-wheel drive. We should also mention about the horsepower, but firstly you want to have a well balanced car from front to back.
Drifting training courses are offered in select areas, all across the United States. You will find that many of these training courses are located in California, where underground drifting first got its start. Training courses are offered for both men and women, anyone who has a love for the sport. By performing a standard internet search, you should be able to determine whether or not any of these training courses are offered in your area. While they may not exist in your area, they are the best way to prepare for your next drifting experience, whether that experience remains on the amateur level or you graduate to the professional class.
